The sets that have followed Whispers of the Old Gods can best be described as hit and miss. To add to the surreal air, after so many near misses Chakki walked away the winner with a control-heavy line-up. At Dreamhack Austin-the major tournament that immediately followed Standard’s arrival-excitement abounded with new deck archetypes as far as the eye could see. The Force of Nature-Savage Roar combo bit the dust and briefly left Druid floundering for an effective play style, and the demise of the face-loving Leper Gnome gave control fanatics even briefer hope that aggro might struggle. While that hasn’t been the case, combined with the new set’s arrival and huge swathes of cards leaving Standard simultaneously, it gave us a huge metagame shake-up. The demise of the face-loving Leper Gnome gave control fanatics brief hope that aggro might struggle. Previously, Team 5 had been more careful with nerfs than Kobolds are with candles, but to lay the ground for the first Standard rotation the designers unleashed an unprecedented wave of adjustments that gave us hope that they would continue to tweak power levels throughout the year. The most extreme case was a card named Dig Through Time, which was at one point only legal as a 4-off in standard (where it wasn't even the most played card by far). The start of 2016 introduced a largely unprecedented concept in terms of Hearthstone’s design philosophy: Changing a lot of cards at once. In the last 4 years there have been 3 cards that got banned from one or both of those formats, while only being good roleplayers in standard (and one of them seeing pretty much no play in standard whatsoever). Stuff like Terminus actually happens regularly in magic, where a card is good (sometimes even mediocre) in standard, but absolutely blows open formats like Modern (cards from the last 12 years) or legacy (all cards). Also worth mentioning about Terminus is that it only sees play in one specific deck thats heavily geared toward making Terminus work, so its not really a staple but more of a tool that the most popular deck uses to absolutely stomp people who try to build a wide boardstate. It was still played, but less so than the 4 mana Mass Removal that was legal in Standard at the time. These factors made Terminus a lot weaker in Standard than it is in Legacy. In tandem they make it very easy to arrange for a situation where you draw Terminus. One lets you draw 3 cards and put back 2 from your hand on top of the library for one mana, which allows you to set up Terminus easily, the other stays in play and allows you to look at the top 3 cards of your library and rearange them. In Legacy there are two cards that help in making this very consistent. The actual text of Terminus is "If Terminus is the first card you draw this turn it costs 1 mana, otherwise you can cast it for 6 mana". This means that the card is far weaker when the game goes on long enough for the card disadvantage to matter, similarly to how soulfiring a Frothing Berserker out of Pirate Warrior will go a long way to stopping their one threat, while Soulfiring the Imp Gang Boss out of Reno will eventually hurt you (maybe soulfire is not the best example since warlock can easily recoup cardadvantage, but you get the point). Force of Wills cost of 0 mana is actually a cost of 1 life and exiling a card from the hand, alternatively you can pay five. Swords gives the Creatures controller life equal to the creatures power, which is not all that relevant. Swords to Plowshares and Force of Will were staples in Standard (which they have not been legal in for nearly 20 years at this point), but both have downsides that I did not mention.
